Why GameChanger Videos Look So Wide (and How to Fix It)

You did everything right. Phone charged, camera clipped to the backstop, stream running before first pitch.

Then your kid rips one into the gap, and the whole family watches a tiny figure sprint across a huge green rectangle. Someone in the group chat asks which one is him.

Later that night you pull up the replay to save the moment, and you can't. Your kid takes up about 2 percent of the screen. You can see that a double happened. You just can't see your kid hitting it.

That's the part that stings. You didn't film the game to prove a run scored. You filmed it to watch your own child play. Sometimes you recognize the jersey number before you recognize your own child. And the video you ended up with could be anyone's kid, on any field, anywhere.

If you're nodding along because that's exactly what your videos look like, nothing is wrong with your camera and nothing is wrong with you. That wide, far-away look is built into how most GameChanger streams are filmed. Here's why it happens, and every realistic way to fix it, from free adjustments to a camera that follows the play.

Why the shot is so wide

A fixed camera has one job: don't miss anything. Nobody is standing behind it to move it, so it has to see the whole field at once. The only way to see the whole field at once is a wide shot. And in a wide shot, every player is small.

Here's the part almost nobody explains: the wide view is intentional. Camera makers design these systems around one rule: missing part of the play is worse than showing the whole game from too far away. They aren't trying to make cinematic footage. They're trying to guarantee nothing ever leaves the frame. So the shot isn't broken. It's a compromise. And once you see it that way, it makes sense why every fixed-camera system on every field looks basically the same.

The cameras most people stream with make it wider still. A phone's default lens is wide. The Mevo Start, GameChanger's official camera partner, films a very wide fixed view. GoPros use ultra-wide lenses, which are great for surfing and terrible for watching a shortstop from 90 feet away.

The pitch usually looks fine because the batter is the closest player to the camera. The moment the ball is in play, the action moves away from the lens and the players shrink.

Fix 1: move the camera closer and higher (free)

Placement is the biggest free improvement available.

Behind the backstop, slightly toward the first-base side, is the best spot for a single fixed camera. Every batter, the pitcher, and most infield plays sit in the center of the frame.

Height matters just as much. Get the camera above fence height so the frame is filled with field instead of chain link and the backs of heads. We wrote a full guide on filming through and over a chain-link fence.

And never put a wide camera in the outfield. At 200 feet on a wide lens, the batter is barely recognizable.

Fix 2: frame the infield, not the whole field (free, with a tradeoff)

Most plays happen in the infield. If your camera stays wide enough to catch a deep fly ball, every routine ground ball looks like it's happening a county away.

Zoom in slightly so the frame holds the infield comfortably. If your phone has a second lens with real optical zoom, use it. Go easy on digital zoom, which magnifies the image by stretching it and gets mushy fast.

The tradeoff is honest: a ball hit over everyone's head will leave the frame for a moment. Most parents happily make that trade.

Fix 3: put a person on the camera

A fixed camera can't follow the play. A person can.

Our Capture App setup is simple. Your phone mounts high on the tripod, above or past the fence. An iPad mounts lower on the front of the same tripod. Whoever has camera duty just sits in a chair in front of it and watches the game on the iPad, the way you'd watch it from the best seat in the park. When the play moves, they nudge the tripod to follow it and tap the iPad to zoom. That's the whole job. A camp chair, a screen, and a ball game.

Framing stays much tighter than any fixed camera because the camera only has to see where the ball actually is, not everywhere it might go. It isn't automatic, and one person is still following the game on a screen instead of with their own eyes. But it's comfortable, it's easy to hand off between innings, and it's a real fix using a phone you already own.

Fix 4: a camera that follows the play on its own

This is the reason BallHawk exists. It isn't designed to replace your camera. It's designed to replace the camera operator.

The camera does the watching, and you get to stand at the fence and see your kid play with your own eyes, knowing the tight, watchable footage will be there after the last out.
