You already keep score in GameChanger. Grandparents follow the stream. Coaches check the box score before the team gets to the parking lot. The scoring side works great.
The video side is usually the weak link. We've spent years building sports filming technology and broadcasting software, and we've filmed a lot of real baseball and softball with it. This guide is about what actually happens when you film a game, and what fixes it.

What actually goes wrong with GameChanger video
Most GameChanger streams start the same way: a phone, GoPro, or Mevo clipped to the backstop fence. For the pitch, it looks fine. The batter is close. You can see the swing.
Then the ball is put in play, and the footage falls apart. The players become tiny. The umpire stands up and blocks home plate. A ground ball goes to somebody, but you can't tell who. The runner rounds first and disappears into the distance. In the family group chat, someone asks "Was that him?" Everyone watching is guessing.
Add chain link filling the frame, a phone cooking in the July sun, a battery that dies in game two, and three hours of footage nobody will ever scrub through, and you have a normal Saturday at a youth baseball field.
Every setup below fixes part of that. Here is what each one actually does at a real field.
Problem 1: the fence/backstop is in your shot
Clipping a camera to the backstop is the standard move, and chain link is the price. Autofocus grabs the fence instead of the field. Even when focus holds, the links show up in the image.
Two fixes work. Press the lens directly into a gap in the links, which works but limits where the camera can sit. Or get the camera past the fence entirely. This is why we built our tripod the way we did: the top of the tripod passes through an opening in the backstop fence or net, and the gimbal and phone attach on the field side. The phone and gimbal end up on the field side of the fence, so the shot is clean, with no chain link or netting in front of the lens. And when passing the tripod through isn't practical, BallHawk can still track through a fence or net, so the backstop stops dictating your setup.

Two placement rules apply to every camera on this list. Get high; fence height is the minimum. And never put a wide-angle camera in the outfield. At 200 feet, the batter is a rumor.
Problem 2: you can't follow the play
This is the big one, and no fixed camera solves it. Here is how each option handles it.
A phone on the backstop (free with the app). Easy, free, and simple. Setup takes a minute, everyone knows how it works, and it is better than nothing. Just be honest with yourself about what it delivers: the pitch and the swing look fine, and once the ball is hit, you can't tell which kid is yours. The play itself is a guess.
The Apollo Streams Capture App with a tripod. Put your phone high on the tripod, above or past the fence, open the Capture App, and mount the iPad lower on the front of the same tripod. Then sit down. That is the whole idea: the tripod was designed so the operator sits comfortably right in front of it, watching the live camera feed on the mounted iPad, turning the tripod by hand to follow the play, and controlling zoom from the iPad. Your phone is filming from well above the fence while you're comfortably watching the live feed from your chair, and you always see exactly what the camera sees instead of guessing where it is pointed. Runners, throws, and plays at the plate stay much tighter than a fixed camera ever could. It isn't automatic, but it gives you far more control while still using the phone you already own.
GoPro. GoPro and GameChanger announced an official integration in 2025, so a Hero 13 or newer can stream directly into the app. GoPros are fantastic action cameras, but their ultra-wide lenses are not well suited to following baseball from behind the backstop. Players shrink even further than they do on a phone, and outfielders become so small they are hard to identify. It handles sun and weather better than a phone does. That is the honest summary.
Mevo. The Mevo Start is GameChanger's official camera partner, and as a streaming camera it is solid: 1080p, quick setup, set-and-forget. It is still a very wide fixed shot. Tiny players, no tracking, no zooming into the action, hard to follow the play. If your team already owns one, use it knowing what it will not do.
DSLR, mirrorless, or camcorder. The best image quality here, with optical zoom that actually brings the play close. But someone has to operate it all game, every game, and getting its feed into GameChanger requires extra hardware most families will try exactly once. Right tool for a dedicated team videographer.

Problem 3: heat and battery
Streaming video is one of the hardest things you can ask a phone or small camera to do, and July bleachers make it worse. Shade the device, drop screen brightness, and take the case off. Small action cameras get hot in direct sun too.
A phone recording or streaming lasts roughly three hours. A doubleheader is longer than that. Bring a battery bank, top off between games, and don't make your filming device also run your hotspot. We wrote full guides on keeping your phone from overheating and getting through an all-day tournament.
What BallHawk does differently

Its battery lasts about four hours and is replaceable, so you can swap in a charged one between games. A phone filming on its own battery lasts roughly three hours, but it can pull power from the gimbal, the CoolStream battery, or an external battery. The phone is never the thing that ends your day.
How we actually film a baseball game with it
Placement first. Put BallHawk behind the backstop, slightly toward the first-base side. Imagine extending the third-base line through home plate; where that line crosses behind the fence is the spot. From there it tracks the batter, follows the base runner as the play develops, and returns to home plate on its own when the play ends.
Now the part fixed cameras can't touch. The controller's D-pad is laid out like a baseball diamond. Left jumps to third. Up jumps to second. Right jumps to first. Down returns to home. After a few innings it becomes second nature because you're simply pressing the base where the play is happening. You can take over manual control any time you want and hand it back just as fast. Pickoff at first, steal of third, play at the plate: one press and the camera is already there.

Multi-camera baseball, if you want to go further
One BallHawk films a game well. Several film it like a broadcast.
Additional units can go behind the pitcher, in center field, in left or right field, or elevated behind the outfield fence. Each camera tracks independently. You just switch between angles. With the telephoto lens on a recent iPhone (the 17 Pro Max is the standout), those outfield angles hold up remarkably well.
Start with one camera and you've dramatically improved your stream. Add more BallHawks and you're no longer just filming the game. You're producing it.
Problem 4: finding the highlights afterward
The traditional workflow is filming three hours and then scrubbing through three hours. Most parents never do it, and the season disappears into a camera roll.

Sports filming has moved in one direction for years. Fixed cameras let people watch. Operated cameras let people follow the play. AI systems keep the footage close to the action while removing most of the work.
