There is always that one field. The tournament complex out past the edge of town where your phone shows one bar and the stream freezes in the second inning. Grandma texts "it stopped again." Now you are troubleshooting instead of watching.
Weak cell service is one of the most common reasons live streams fail. Most of it is fixable with ten minutes of planning. Here is what actually works.
Test upload speed, not bars
Live streaming sends video from your phone up to the internet. That's why upload speed matters far more than download speed. Bars measure signal. Streams run on upload speed, and the two do not always match. Before warmups, run a speed test where you'll actually be filming. The easiest way is to type "speed test" into Google and tap Run Speed Test. If you're using Apollo Streams, you can also tap Speed Test directly from Setup Live Stream inside the app.
Test where your tripod will be, not from the parking lot. Moving even 50 feet can make a surprising difference. We've seen a huge difference between the inside of a press box and the roof of that same press box. You want about 5 Mbps upload for solid 1080p. Around 2.5 Mbps still handles 720p.
If you get a number below 1 Mbps, skip to plan B at the bottom. No setting will save that stream.
Lower your resolution before the game
A 720p stream needs about half the bandwidth of 1080p. On the phone where Grandma is watching, the difference is hard to spot. A smooth 720p stream beats a frozen 1080p stream every time. Set it before the game starts so you are not digging through menus mid-inning.
Expect the tower to get crowded
Everyone at the tournament is competing for the same cell tower. At 8 am your stream may be perfect. By 11, three hundred parents are on the same tower and everything crawls. If you can pick, earlier games stream better. If you cannot, drop resolution further for the busy middle of the day.
Don't assume your carrier is the best one
Not all cell towers belong to the same carrier. You might be standing on a field where your phone only has one bar, while another parent is getting a perfect signal because they're using a different network.
Ask around. If another parent has a stronger connection, most are happy to turn on their hotspot for the game. Connecting to their phone can completely change your streaming experience without buying any new equipment.
The key is to test a few different phones during warmups. A quick speed test on two or three carriers will often tell you which network has the strongest connection at that field. One bar on your phone doesn't always mean the field has poor service. It may just mean your carrier isn't the best one there.
Back when we streamed games with a full three-camera setup, we carried three phones, each on a different carrier. After the speed test, whichever phone had the best connection became the main camera, and the other two became sideline cameras for that game. Most families don't need to go that far, but the principle holds at any level: the best network at that field wins, no matter whose pocket it is in.
Do not make one phone do everything
Streaming from a phone that is also running its own hotspot is asking too much of one battery, one radio, and one warm device. Heat is its own problem in July, and we wrote about keeping your phone cool separately. If you use a hotspot, make it a second phone. Let one device provide internet while the other focuses on filming and streaming.
Plan B: record now, share later
Some fields just do not have the service. Don't fight the connection. Record locally in full quality, then upload the game or the highlights when you are back on wifi. A stream that never happened stings for an afternoon. Footage that never got recorded is gone for good.
Make plan B the default at your worst two fields. Tell the family when to expect the video, then put the phone down and watch the game.
