There's a meeting most sports parents eventually sit through.
A coach pulls you aside after practice. He tells you your kid has something. Then he tells you that if you're serious, it's time to drop the other stuff. Year-round now. Same sport, all four seasons. The other kids are already doing it.
And you drive home doing math in your head. She's nine. She loves soccer in the fall, she's fast on the basketball court, and she asked about swimming last summer. But you heard the word serious, and nobody wants to be the parent who cost their kid a shot.
So you narrow it down. You fill the calendar. You call it commitment.
Early specialization has become the default assumption in a lot of youth programs. The pediatric research is more cautious than the culture around it, and it's worth knowing which numbers hold up and which ones don't.
What the evidence actually shows
The strongest finding is about injuries.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Pediatrics found that highly specialized young athletes had a pooled relative risk of 1.81 for overuse injury compared with athletes with low specialization. In plain terms, the highly specialized group got overuse injuries at close to twice the rate.
That's an association across many studies, not proof that specializing caused the injuries. But it points the same direction consistently, and it's the cleanest number in this conversation.
The American Academy of Pediatrics clinical report on sports specialization puts it this way: current evidence suggests that delaying specialization for most sports until after puberty, around 15 or 16, will minimize the risks and lead to a higher likelihood of athletic success. That's the pediatricians' own professional body, hedged the way they hedged it.
The same report notes that Division I NCAA athletes are more likely to have played multiple sports in high school, and that of the 322 athletes invited to the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, 87 percent reported playing multiple high school sports.
Read that carefully, because it's easy to overclaim. It doesn't prove multi-sport play produces elite athletes. Plenty of things correlate with reaching that level. What it does undercut is the specific fear the coach is selling, which is that playing other sports puts your kid behind.
The sports where this is different
Not every sport works this way, and the AAP says so directly.
Figure skating, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and diving are named exceptions, because peak performance in those sports typically arrives before full physical maturity. If your daughter is a serious gymnast, the math is different and the coaches telling you so are not wrong.
Worth saying too: we're not against club sports, competition, or coaches. Most youth coaches are inside the same system the parents are, and a lot of them genuinely believe early commitment is what a kid needs. The pressure to decide at nine is the problem, not the people passing it along.
The number we couldn't verify
You've probably seen this one: 70 percent of kids quit organized sports by age 13. It's everywhere. Major outlets run it. The AAP has repeated it. We nearly built a section of this article around it.
Then we went looking for the study behind it and couldn't find one. Marty Fox of the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society program and Joseph Janosky of Lasell University traced the number back through decades of citations and found a chain of secondary sources rather than a primary finding. Janosky calls it citation drift. A number gets repeated, then cited, then normalized, until it stops having to prove itself. So we're not building anything on it.
What does hold up about burnout
We don't need that number anyway. The pediatric literature covers this ground directly.
The AAP's 2024 clinical report on overuse injuries, overtraining, and burnout describes burnout as one of the primary reasons for attrition in youth sports. It defines burnout as physical or mental exhaustion plus a fading sense of accomplishment, ending in a kid who stops valuing the sport at all.
That report also gives parents something concrete, which most youth sports advice does not. It recommends at least one to two days per week away from competition and sport-specific training, and two to three months away from any given sport over the course of a year.
If you take one thing from this article, take that. Not a philosophy. A schedule.
What different sports quietly build
There's a practical logic to the multi-sport path beyond variety.
Sports ask different things of a kid. Swimming teaches them to move without the ground under them. Basketball asks them to read nine other people at speed. Wrestling asks them to solve a problem while somebody is actively making it worse. Soccer asks them to make decisions with their head up.
A kid who plays several sports meets a wider range of movements, decisions, and competitive situations, and spends less of the year repeating the same sport-specific demands. A kid who only ever throws from a mound gets a lot of practice at one thing and much less at everything else.
That isn't an unfocused childhood. It's a wider base.
A record of a childhood
Here's the part that has nothing to do with scholarships.
If your kid specializes at nine and walks away at 14, what you're left with is a hard drive full of one sport and a teenager who doesn't want to talk about it.
If your kid plays three sports and is still playing at 17, what you have is a record of a childhood. The fall she was terrible at soccer and loved it anyway. The winter she figured out she could rebound against bigger kids. The spring she finally squared one up. Different fields, different seasons, same kid getting braver.
That's the footage nobody regrets having. Not the showcase reel. The ordinary Saturdays.
You're not only raising an athlete. You're raising someone who competes, loses, gets back up, and hopefully still wants to play at 25.

What we'd actually do
Don't rush the decision in elementary or middle school. For most sports there's little reason to lock in early, and AAP guidance favors delaying single-sport specialization until mid-to-late adolescence where it's practical.
Build in real time off. One to two days a week away from sport-specific training, and two to three months away from the primary sport across the year. This is the most actionable guidance in the pediatric literature and the most commonly ignored.
Watch whether she still wants to go. Not whether she's winning. Every kid drags some weeks. A kid who stops wanting to go, week after week, is telling you something, and it usually isn't about talent.
Ask the coach a question. How many of the 10-year-olds from five years ago are still playing? It's a conversation starter rather than a test, and a thoughtful coach will have thought about it.
Film the seasons nobody labeled serious. You won't know which ones mattered for another ten years.
