If you have been researching AI tracking for your kid's games, you have probably found BallHawk and XbotGo. BallHawk and XbotGo's Chameleon use a phone mounted on a motorized tracking system. XbotGo's Falcon takes a different approach with a dedicated camera built in. All three are designed to follow the action so nobody has to operate a camera for the entire game.
The differences show up in the moments that decide whether you actually got the play: a pickoff throw the AI didn't expect, a phone cooking in direct sun in the fifth inning, a highlight you want to find tonight instead of digging through three hours of video.
We build BallHawk, so read this knowing where we stand. We've also spent years filming thousands of real games, and we'd rather give you an honest comparison than an ad. Honest is more useful, and you'll check everything we say anyway.
We have not completed a controlled, side-by-side field test against both XbotGo products. XbotGo features, specifications, and prices in this article come from its current official product materials. BallHawk descriptions reflect the preproduction system we are currently building and testing.

What they have in common
BallHawk and the Chameleon both use a phone as the recording camera, and that's a sound idea. A recent iPhone can produce excellent sports footage, and a phone-based system lets you improve the camera later without replacing the tracking mount. The Falcon takes the other path: a standalone camera with no phone involved.
All three systems use AI to adjust the camera around the action instead of leaving a camera completely fixed. How tight the framing stays depends on the product, sport, mode, and situation. All three stream live.
On price: as displayed on XbotGo's live product page on August 6, 2026, the Chameleon Standard Bundle was $299.99 under a promotion running through August 17, with the listed regular price at $369. Tripod and accessory bundles run $349.99 to $549.99, and the Falcon Standard is $699. BallHawk's final Kickstarter pricing has not yet been announced. XbotGo can be purchased today, while BallHawk pricing will become directly comparable when the campaign launches. Verify current prices before you buy anything, including ours.
What a subscription gets you, and what it doesn't
Neither system forces you into a monthly payment just to turn on the camera and record.
XbotGo includes its core sports-tracking app, streaming, editing tools, remote control, and 20 GB of cloud storage without a subscription. Some future analysis products or add-ons could be priced separately, but the core experience is included.
BallHawk also works without a subscription. It's an Apple DockKit-compatible gimbal, so it works with the iPhone Camera app and a broad range of compatible camera, video, social, and streaming apps built on Apple's camera frameworks. Basic recording, streaming, and DockKit tracking never require an Apollo Streams account or a recurring fee. Compatible third-party apps may have their own fees, account requirements, or streaming restrictions, and not every app supports every DockKit capability. BallHawk itself does not require an Apollo Streams subscription.
BallHawk includes a 30-day trial of Apollo Streams Capture. When the trial ends, BallHawk continues working as a DockKit-compatible gimbal through compatible apps. Continued access to Capture's sports-production features requires a paid Capture plan.
Apollo Streams Capture plans add different levels of sports-production capability. Depending on the plan, those tools can include sports-specific tracking, one-button highlights, instant replay, live scoreboards, game clocks, live streaming, multiple camera angles, sponsor tools, and Apollo Streams Network distribution. Those plans exist for families, teams, and broadcasters who want more than basic tracking.
When the play leaves the frame
No AI tracker is perfect. Baseball presents one of the hardest tracking problems: the ball is small, the action jumps from a dead stop to three places at once, and the most important play of the inning might be a pickoff throw behind the runner. The important question is how quickly you can recover when the system anticipates the wrong movement.
Credit where due: XbotGo has real answers here. The Chameleon includes a Bluetooth remote and can be monitored or controlled through supported devices like another phone or an Apple Watch. Its jersey-number recognition and individual player tracking are currently available in Basketball Mode only, with more sports planned. XbotGo supports more than ten sports according to its current product materials, and for continuous-flow sports like soccer, that breadth makes sense.
BallHawk's answer starts with automatic tracking. With Apollo Streams Capture, its baseball tracking follows the batter, then tracks the play around the bases and zooms in on the base runner after contact. Add more BallHawks and each one tracks on its own: one can follow players in the outfield, and one set up beyond the outfield fence can zoom in over the pitcher's shoulder, showing every pitch and the full strike zone the way professional broadcasts do. Capture also integrates with the GameChanger app, so you keep GameChanger for scoring, stats, and box scores while BallHawk handles the filming. For baseball families already living in GameChanger, that matters.
The same Capture system includes the Game Controller, designed around baseball's geometry for the moments automation reads wrong. The directional pad mirrors the diamond. Left jumps toward third, up toward second, right toward first, and down toward home. Pickoff at first: one press, and the camera is already there. Steal of third: one press. Rundown between bases: you're a press away from either end of it. Play at the plate, or an unexpected throw behind the runner: one press. You're not steering a camera. You're pointing at a base.
To be clear, that's a manual recovery tool, not a claim that BallHawk's AI never loses a play. It reflects a different design priority. XbotGo emphasizes broad multi-sport automation. BallHawk's controller adds a baseball-specific way to recover when the action suddenly jumps to another base.
Keeping the play in frame isn't the same as seeing it
There's another part of tracking that doesn't get talked about enough: how close the camera gets to the action.
A camera can technically capture the entire play and still leave you wondering what happened. That's the tradeoff with very wide framing. You see more of the field, but the ball gets smaller, the players get smaller, and the moment you actually care about can be hard to see. Think about a winning goal in soccer. If the camera stays wide enough to show half the field, the ball crossing the goal line is a tiny movement on a phone screen. Or a close play at second base: the runner, the fielder, and the umpire can all be in the frame and still be too small to tell whether the runner was safe.
BallHawk doesn't just follow where the play goes. It tightens the shot as the action develops. With Apollo Streams Capture, it automatically adjusts framing and zoom using its three camera views to keep the action close. And when you want control yourself, the Game Controller lets you zoom in or out without touching the filming phone.
That matters in every sport. A runner sliding into second. A receiver making a catch along the sideline. A soccer player taking the shot that wins the game. The goal isn't to prove the play happened somewhere inside the frame. It's to actually see the moment.
XbotGo's wider framing can be useful when seeing more of the field is the priority. BallHawk puts the emphasis on bringing you closer to the action, with automatic framing plus manual zoom when you want it. One question is whether the camera followed the play. The other is whether the footage lets you see what actually happened.
XbotGo's new Falcon Baseball Mode
On August 4, 2026, XbotGo added Baseball Mode to the Falcon through an app update. The camera sets up behind the catcher and frames the full diamond, with a baseball scoreboard for innings, outs, and score. That's a legitimate baseball feature. BallHawk takes a different approach, following a tighter view of the action while giving the parent rapid base-to-base redirection through the controller. Neither approach guarantees a perfect recording of every play.
Heat: the failure nobody advertises
Here's the problem every phone-based system shares, ours included: the best camera position is usually in direct sun. A phone filming for a long stretch in summer heat can dim its screen and throttle performance, and under hot enough conditions it can stop recording or shut down. How soon depends on the phone, temperature, direct sunlight, case, charging, and airflow. When the phone quits, the tracking quits with it.
XbotGo addresses heat with shade. Its optional Weather Guard Umbrella blocks direct sunlight with UV50+ protection, is marketed as helping reduce device overheating, and provides some cover from light rain. It's shade, though, not active cooling. The Falcon avoids filming-phone overheating entirely because it doesn't use a phone as its camera, though no electronics are completely immune to summer heat.
BallHawk addresses the same problem with active cooling built into the gimbal. CoolStream, the integrated phone chiller, actively pulls heat away from the filming phone, and a weather shield is included. That cooling reduces the risk of heat-related recording failures during long games and tournament days. It exists because heat ruined enough of our own recordings that we refused to bring BallHawk to market without addressing it.
If your kid plays a summer sport, in the South, or in all-day tournaments, weight this section heavily. Heat is not an edge case. It's July.
After the last out
Footage you can't find is footage you effectively don't have. A three-hour recording with your kid's triple buried somewhere in the middle usually stays buried.
XbotGo gives you real tools here: XbotGo Live alongside YouTube, Facebook, and RTMP streaming, plus 20 GB of included cloud storage on both Chameleon and Falcon. Chameleon's AI Auto Editing currently supports basketball, with additional sports recognition in development. Falcon includes editing and highlight tools through the XbotGo app, but automatic event-detection support varies by mode and software version.
BallHawk's approach runs through Capture. The Game Controller marks a highlight the moment it happens, so by the time the game ends, the highlights are already separated from the full game. Depending on the selected Capture plan, the Apollo Streams Network can then organize games and highlights around teams, leagues, tournaments, and athletes. Family and friends watch free through the Apollo Streams Network app; watching never requires the broadcaster's Capture subscription.
The real difference: BallHawk's controller lets the person watching the game intentionally mark the moment immediately, and Apollo Streams can place that highlight inside a larger team and athlete ecosystem. Instead of relying only on a link passed through a group text, the game lives in an organized sports network where families can follow the team and receive alerts.
"But I don't want to give up my phone"
The most common objection to any phone-based system, theirs or ours. The short answer: you don't have to.
Many families solve this by using a second iPhone as the filming phone. An older compatible phone from a drawer or a used or refurbished phone from a reputable seller can work, with no phone number attached. Local recording can work without a cellular plan or mobile data, depending on the app. Live streaming requires a usable internet connection, and the filming phone can ride on the hotspot of the phone in your pocket. You can also use your primary phone if you don't mind leaving it on the gimbal during the game.
A recent used iPhone can deliver strong video quality while giving you a camera that can be replaced or upgraded independently from the gimbal. For BallHawk, Apollo Streams recommends an iPhone 12 or newer, running a recent version of iOS.
What about the Falcon?
Fair question, since XbotGo's own lineup includes an answer to the phone objection. The Falcon is a standalone 4K sports camera with built-in AI tracking, more than ten supported sports, no required core subscription, 20 GB of included cloud storage, IPX5 weather resistance, support for up to 1 TB of microSD storage, roughly four hours of internal battery runtime depending on settings, and now Baseball Mode. If you've decided you'll never use a phone to film, it's a credible option and we won't pretend otherwise.
The tradeoffs: the microSD card is required and sold separately, roughly four hours of battery could matter across long tournament days, and the Falcon Standard was listed at $699 at the time of writing. The built-in sensor doesn't change, although XbotGo continues improving the camera through app and firmware updates. A phone-based system takes a different approach, because the physical camera can also improve when you replace the phone.
What we'd actually do
Choose the XbotGo Chameleon if you want a phone-based sports tracker you can buy today, with broad multi-sport support and core tracking, recording, streaming, highlights, and cloud storage included without a subscription. At its current promotional price, Chameleon is the lowest-cost option of the three that can be purchased and shipped today. Go in comfortable managing phone heat with shade, airflow, and accessories.
Choose the XbotGo Falcon if you don't want to dedicate a phone to filming and you want a standalone 4K camera with broad multi-sport support, local microSD recording, included cloud storage, and the new Baseball Mode. Go in comfortable with its price, fixed camera sensor, and roughly four-hour internal runtime.
Consider BallHawk if you care not only about capturing the play but actually seeing it. BallHawk follows the action tightly and, with Capture, automatically adjusts framing and zoom through its three camera views, with manual zoom on the Game Controller when you want more control. That matters on a close play at second just as much as on the winning goal in a soccer match. Add active phone cooling, baseball-specific recovery controls, GameChanger integration, an Apple DockKit-compatible gimbal that needs no subscription for basic use, and Capture's path into highlights, scoreboards, replay, multi-camera production, sponsor tools, and Apollo Streams Network distribution, and BallHawk is built for families who want more than a wide record of the field. Backing it means waiting for a Kickstarter launch rather than buying a shipping product today.
Not every difference between these systems is an advantage. Some are simply different approaches, and the right one depends on what you film.
The honest bottom line: if you need a finished system today, XbotGo is available now. If you're willing to wait for a system designed to get you closer to the action, actively manage phone heat, recover quickly when baseball changes direction, and grow into a complete live-production platform, that's where BallHawk is different.

Do I need to give up my primary phone?
No. A separate compatible iPhone works with BallHawk, and a separate smartphone works with the Chameleon. The Falcon requires no filming phone at all.
